MALMÖ – THE ÖRESUND METROPOLIS
If you think about a city to go to, in Sweden to get your Instagram photos, you are probably not thinking about Malmö, but you should. Malmö is a charming city with an interesting contrast between old and new, a diverse food & café scene and a multicultural flair. Once a grey and fuddy-duddy shipyard city, Malmö has now become a center for new technologies and services including a vivid start-up scene.
Malmö is the capital of the Skåne County and it is Swedens 3rd largest city, with about 280.000 citizens, after Stockholm and Gothenborg. Its proximity to Copenhagen and accessibility by plane, train or car, make it a perfect travel destination. And while you are there, make sure to pay the whole region of Skåne a visit for more breathtaking Instagram photo spots your followers will envy you for.
1. GAMLA VÄSTER – MALMÖ INSTAGRAM SPOTS
Gamla Väster is the western part of Malmö's Gamla Staden (Old Town) with a large number of historical buildings. Especially interesting for all you alley and cobblestone lovers and Instagram photo spot chasers are the streets around “Jakob Nilsgatan”, “Hjorttackegatan” and “Jöns Filsgatan”. Make sure to visit there early morning or late evening so you will encounter fewer citizens and tourists. Top time as always is during sunrise on a Sunday morning.
Tip: Also worth visiting are the squares “Lilla Torg” and the “Stortorget”, just a couple of hundred meters from those sweet instagramable alleys. But only if there aren't any festivals because then the squares are full of stages and little huts and you can't really breathe in the beauty of these spots.
2. OLD LIGHTHOUSE(S)
The old lighthouse(s) are at the border between the old historic district and the new Väster Hamnen district. You really can't miss the bigger one, and it's a great place to go there at sunrise or sunset. Both give you nice light and offer opportunities for various perspectives. Make sure to really check out different angles otherwise you will stick with the same shot everyone else has.
The second smaller lighthouse is a bit more to the Väster Hamnen area (see detailed spot in our map), but at the time we were in Malmö (August 2018) it was totally covered in scaffolding and wrapped with a tarpaulin. That's why we don't have any photos of it. 🙁
3. STADSBIBLIOTEK (CITY LIBRARY) – MALMÖ INSTAGRAM SPOTS
If you think now: “Oh no. An old and fuddy-duddy library should be an Instagram hotspot?”. Yes, that's right, this library is a total hotspot, and it is light and modern on top of that. It even looks a bit as if they built this library with photographers in mind (finally someone thinks on us Instagramers when creating a building. ;))
The large hall has a huge window with a perfect view, the boards are well arranged and everything is light and bright. It isn't possible to not take a good picture here. You will see it!
4. VÄSTRA HAMNEN – MALMÖ INSTAGRAM SPOTS
Västra Hamnen (or Western harbor) is a new and very modern district in Malmö. It's still in development and new buildings grow into the sky every day. The district is located on a former shipyard area right beside the sea, only less than a kilometer north-west of the medieval old town of Malmö, which makes it easily accessible.
5. TURNING TORSO – MALMÖ INSTAGRAM SPOTS
You can't miss this building at all when in Malmö. It is visible nearly from everywhere in the town (it's great for orientation too) and the Turning Torso looks good from so many angles and directions. It is located in the Västra Hamnen district, but as it is such an iconic building it is an Instagram photo spot by itself.
You can get a close up when really near (bring a wide-angle lens), put the building into context with a person for the dimension, have it in great sunlight, in a puddle, far away from the beach, etc. The possibilities are really endless. On top: It's a really cool building. The only downside is that you can't get in.
6. RIBERSBORGS KALLBADHUS – MALMÖ INSTAGRAM SPOTS
Located right by the Ribersborg beach of Malmö you find the outdoor bathing house Ribersborgs Kallbadhus. All year round both locals and visitors experience cold water bathing and sauna here – a beloved tradition in Malmö and in Sweden.
Though for us Instagram photo spot chasers the bridge towards the Kallbadhus and the café are much more of interest. With its green wooden facade against a blue sky or moody clouds, it's the perfect location for some snaps with likes and comments guaranteed.
7. ØRESUND BRIDGE – MALMÖ INSTAGRAM SPOTS
Kind of another must-visit photo spots when in Malmö is directly by or under the Øresund bridge. This bridge is a masterpiece of modern engineering and it is also perfect for photos. The bridge is nearly 8 (!!) kilometers long and from the photo spot or viewpoint, it looks like the bridge is vanishing into endlessness.
The spot under the bridge can be easily reached. Just go up to the official viewpoint by car (or bike if you feel like it) and then follow a small path into the direction of the bridge (find the exact location also in our free photo spots map at the end). Stop and shot or be amazed by this view whenever you like along the way.
8. CASTLE MILL & PARK – MALMÖ INSTAGRAM SPOTS
Located just behind Malmöhus Castle you’ll find Slotssparken, which is a beautiful park where you can enjoy a walk or a picnic in the leafy surroundings. If you are into it, you also can do a tour on the canals going through the park and take photos from the water level.
Definitely go and check out the top Instagram photo spot in the park, which is the Castle mill. The mill stands a bit isolated next to a big meadow and is a great motive for your Instagram snap when it stands out against a blue sky with white clouds. You also might start to think you are in the Netherlands. 😉
9. ZENITH'S KOLONIER – MALMÖ INSTAGRAM SPOTS
Zenith's Colonies is one of Malmö's oldest area and one of the oldest garden colonies in Sweden. Zenith Kolonier was founded in 1907, and many of the original quaint cottages have been preserved with their original charm. Zenith is centrally located in Malmö, in the district of Värnhem, and includes 63 little huts, in red, green, yellow, blue and even pink… This idyllic place is a source of joy and recreation for many Malmö residents. And it is an amazing playground for photos and a great Instagram photo spot in Malmö.
10. FISKEHODDORNA
The fish huts were moved from Citadell Bay to Banérkajen in 1956. Nearly 30s Hoddor (huts) were to be demolished, but Malmö Museums saved the best preserved from different ages and relocated them to today's spot. Today they are labeled as culture-minded.
The fish hoddor (huts) are now the Malmö region's largest market for fresh fish and shellfish. Located in a unique environment in the center of Malmö, with a wide range of what the ocean has to offer, caught by local fishermen that sell seafood from the west coast.
The fishing huts are open Tuesday to Saturday between 6.30 and 13.00. But you can walk along the street or pier at all times and get the photo you always wanted from these cute little and colorful huts.
